Audio Transformers
A long-standing, key component of audio equipment, transformers offer multiple functions in audio frequency transmission. They are capable of stepping voltage levels up or down, input/output balancing, impedance matching, eliminating ground loops, and blocking DC while passing audio signal. Audio transformers also create low-frequency distortion, which produces better sound output for the user.
At RS, you'll find hundreds of audio transformers available in different formats to suit whatever application you're working on. Our selection includes audio power, line/impedance matching, isolation transformers, and more. We're proud to supply audio transformer options from some of the best brands in the world, including Hammond Manufacturing, Triad Magnetics, and Neutrik.
Use the filters to narrow down your search by type, power rating, primary impedance, and more. If you have a question, feel free to get in touch with us and a member of the team will be happy to assist you.
How do audio transformers work?
An audio transformer is an electromagnetic device used in amplifiers and high-frequency audio and voice circuits. It transmits and modifies AC input signals to produce AC output signals without the input and output sides being physically connected. This coupling is done by wrapping two insulated copper coils (primary and secondary windings) around a steel or nickel transformer core. This allows for the transmission of frequencies via electromagnetism.
Different core materials and turns ratios (the ratio between the number of coil turns on the primary and secondary windings) can be used to achieve different goals. The use of steel in the core, for example, allows for a higher degree of hysteresis, which makes it better for lower-frequency transfer.
Likewise, different turns ratios can be used to achieve a stepping up or down of the signal level. This means audio transformers can be used for a variety of different applications, making them a staple in both older and modern equipment.
What are the primary functions of audio transformers?
Audio transformers offer myriad benefits for transmission, including:
Stepping up or down of voltages
Audio step-up transformers can be used to increase the voltage from primary to secondary windings; step-down transformers do the opposite. This is achieved by adjusting the turns ratio of the transformer as required.
In real terms, this process allows for adjusting the output level of microphones and bringing instruments in line with it. Appropriate management of the voltage level is also key in ensuring safer operation of the audio equipment being used.
Input/output balancing
Audio transformers are ideal for balancing input/output frequencies to produce optimal power transfer. Likewise, audio power transformers can be used to change balanced signals to unbalanced signals, or vice versa, as the user requires.
Impedance matching
Just as audio transformers can step voltage and current up or down, they can also adjust impedance. While voltage is managed by adjusting the turns ratio of the transformer, impedance can be changed via the square of the turns ratio.
Matching impedance levels between microphones, instruments, amplifiers, and connecting cables allows the user to create efficient power transfer without any signal overload or frequency distortion. This creates a warmer sound output.
Eliminating ground loops
Audio isolation transformers can be used to eliminate ground loop, which produces unwanted hum, buzz, and other noises in the system. The transformer magnetically couples the voltage between signal and ground, meaning ground loop currents are eliminated.
Blocking DC while passing audio signal
While audio equipment power supplies process AC input power, DC can cause transformers to approach saturation. This can lead to voltages in the equipment being affected, creating audible buzzing or even blowing fuses. Choosing the right audio transformer can avoid this.
